The Baolan Railway crosses the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert, where the biggest problem is the mobile sand dunes. Imagine that the railroad tracks have just been laid, and a gust of wind blows, and the sand dunes “run” like naughty children, burying the tracks so tightly that the train is impassable.

The railroad builders had an idea and came up with a super powerful solution – “wheat straw checkered sand barrier”. They spread the wheat straw horizontally and vertically on the sand dunes, digging into the sand to form small squares, like dressing the desert in a green “plaid shirt”. These small squares not only hold the dunes in place, but also retain rainwater and give the desert plants a chance to grow. Gradually, the desert became greener, the dunes were no longer “running around”, and the railroad tracks had a solid foundation.

The dune problem has been solved, and there is also a heat challenge. In the desert summer, the surface temperature can reach sixty or seventy degrees Celsius, and the hot sand can bake eggs. The builders braved the scorching heat and worked in the desert for more than a dozen hours a day. Their skin was tanned, sweat soaked their clothes, but none of them flinched.

When digging the desert tunnel, we ran into another problem. The rocks in the desert are loose and prone to collapse. The builders used the “protect before digging” method, reinforcing the perimeter of the tunnel first and then digging carefully. After countless days and nights of hard work, the tunnel was finally opened and the railway was smoothly extended.

Today, the Baolan Railway has become an important passage connecting North China and Northwest China, which is not only convenient for people to travel, but also drives the economic development of the regions along the line. Desert specialties are shipped all over the country, and tourists from outside also take the train to experience the unique charm of the desert.
